Weekly update 31/5 - Free Jazz Special - Brötzmann, Schlippenbach, Mengelberg, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp...

Heavy focus on free jazz and avantgarde this week, with more than a 100 new additions to that section. Fascinating, aggressive and fierce music on labels like FMP, Saj, BYG Actuel and Horo by artists like Peter Brötzmann, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp and Misha Mengelberg

We've noticed an increased interest in this experimental type of jazz lately, most notably among our younger customers but also musicians who shop from us seem to have fond feelings about it. Experimental music - sometimes disturbing, sometimes beautiful and/or emotionally expanding. Do you listen to free jazz, and what draws you to it? Or is it something you dislike just as much as warped records or over-grading eBay-hustlers (you know who you are...)? It seems to be a genre that people love or hate, with no careless space in between the two sides. Explain yourself and your feelings about this subject in the comments below, or visit our Facebook-page and get the conversation going!

If you prefer to stay on the straight, bop or modal path of jazz we hopefully have something for you too, with a couple of Coltrane-LPs and other household names. Or if soul or reggae is your thing, there might be something for you too!

And take a look at a couple of the more exclusive records below:

Free jazz recorded at a workshop in 1977, with Misha Mengelberg, Peter Brötzmann, John Tchicai and others.

Brötzmann's second LP, packed with chaos and attitude!

1977 LP by Alexander von Schlippenbach with Peter Kowald, Evan Parker and Paul Lovens.

Percussive avantgarde LP recorded in 1972, widely considered a masterpiece in the genre.

Not strictly a free jazz record, but might appeal to the same type of listener. Scary soundtrack with library horror pieces by Ib Glindemann, Philip Green, Geordie Hormel and sound effects by Karl Hardman. If you like this, take a look at the soundtrack to horror classic The Shining too!

Rare Barbados LP with the fantastic "Tomorrow's sun".

"Got to be lovin' you", awesome blue eyed soul that turns into a bossa groove.

Lovely soul/boogie record with some nice two-steppers and midtempo tunes as well.

Sealed copy of this great Ohio soul/boogie LP.

Weekly update 24/5 - Milt Ward, Freddy Cole, Brenton Wood, Lorez Alexandria, Sound Investment and more!

I welcome you all this edition of the Record Mania weekly update with a very decent amout of interesting and great records, especially in the jazz section as you can see below. A respectable amount of soul 7"s for fans of this smaller type of record - often rotating at 45 rpm (prolonging the lower back health of DJ's worldwide since 1949), some great soul LPs, high quality Hip Hop and Reggae along with some Rock records that we haven't stocked before and some "big ticket items" for the collectors. If you're in town, this friday happens to coincide with payday (for most Swedes), which should be an even bigger reason to put one foot in front of the other (and repeat that procedure until you've reached Östgötagatan 2) than Record Store Day!

In case you've been sleeping under a rock, and haven't had access to the Record Mania blog under that said rock, don't forget to listen to our friend Kalle Stringbergs mix that went online this week. Kalle will be throwing a party this Saturday, the 25th of May, at the Lighthouse club here in Stockholm which you can read more about in the blog post about the mix.

We'd like to remind you about the Stockholm Soul Weekender also taking place at The Lighthouse on the 7th and 8th of June, where our poster boy/store front/record store clerk extraordinaire Carl Hedberg will be playing alongside some great names like Wayne Arbon, Brett Franklin, Alex Subinas, Punky Östlund, Karl Marthon and Jens Chreisti.

Last but not least: if you think this week's Jazz additions are too "boring", next weeks update will have a heavy focus on interesting Free Jazz & Avantgarde, with titles on FMP and other interesting labels.

Weekly update 17/5 - Paul Weeden, Rudy Ray Moore, Willie Wright, Don Bryant, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins and more.

This Friday update comes with some great soul/funk records, nice jazz and a bunch of rock LPs as well. Paul Weeden's very uncommon "Attakullaculla", released only in Norway, has some great funky jazz moments. Ann Peebles' husband Don Bryant brings you some good Memphis soul and last but not least Willie Wright's rare 1977 LP has the beautiful "I'm so happy now". Willie also makes the following promises on the back cover:
That it's not a disco record, that it might be tough for teenagers to understand - and that you'll enjoy it if you're into GUITARS! Other highlights are a bunch of Blue Notes and Prestige LPs, and a couple of Chet Baker records.

One of Sweden's finest jazz musicians, Mats Gustafsson (who plays on the excellent Swedish Azz-records), stopped by the store and brought this interesting contraption along. A 7" record with a built-in, manually operated record player in the fold-out cover!
